Instagram comment auto-reply: turn comments into DMs
Someone comments “LINK” — typically seconds later the link is in their inbox, sent from your account, personalized with their name. A real DM on Instagram's official API, free tier included. (Delivery follows Instagram's webhooks and rate limits, and opted-out users are skipped.)

How comment auto-reply works
Three screens between a comment and a DM — the same wizard you saw on the tour, walked through with comment rules in mind.
1.0
Connect your professional account
AutoDM needs an Instagram professional account (Creator or Business) because that's who Instagram grants API messaging to. The connection happens on Instagram's own login — the token lands in AutoDM, your password never leaves Instagram.

Connected account with a healthy token — the foundation of every rule. 2.0
Set the comment trigger
Keywords with four match modes, or any-comment mode for “everyone who comments”. Scope the rule to one post — a drop, a launch, a giveaway — or arm it account-wide once and let it watch everything.
The mechanics worth knowing before you pick:
- Whole-word matching fires on “LINK” and “LINK?” — but not “hyperlink”. Regex exists when you outgrow the basics.
- Any-comment mode turns every comment into a conversation — pair it with repeat protection so regulars aren't re-messaged.
- Caption CTA and trigger reinforce each other: “Comment LINK and I'll DM you” grows reach while the rule answers it.

Write the DM once — it personalizes itself
One template, filled per commenter with their name and handle. Set repeat protection, check the preview bubble, create the automation. From then on each eligible match is answered automatically — typically in seconds, subject to Instagram delivery.

The preview shows exactly what each commenter will receive.
What a comment rule can do
| Trigger | A new comment on your post or reel | delivered by Instagram's webhook, typically in seconds |
|---|---|---|
| Match modes | Any comment, whole word, exact phrase, contains, regex | one message per rule, several rules per post |
| Scope | One specific post or reel — or the whole account | story replies use a separate trigger type |
| The reply | A personalized DM — {{name}}, {{username}}, {{display_name}} | optional public reply, off by default |
| Repeat protection | Per-person window: 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days — or once, ever | repeats only after your window expires |
| Cost | Free tier — unlimited automations | no trial clock, no card on file |
Where AutoDM draws the line
Public replies are optional, never the default. Each comment rule can also post a short public confirmation under the commenter's comment — but it's off unless you enable it, because a wall of identical replies reads as spam to your audience and to Instagram. The DM is where the conversation belongs.
It only messages people who engaged first. Comment and story replies open the door — there is no follower scraping and no purchased lists. (Scheduled bulk campaigns to your own opted-in audience are a separate, explicitly consent-based feature.) Opt-out detection respects anyone who asks to be left alone.
Story replies are a separate trigger. They're not comments, so they get their own rule type — same wizard, same personalization. It's covered in the story reply automation guide.
Comment auto-reply questions
Does AutoDM post a public reply to the comment?
Only if you enable it. Each comment rule has an optional “Also post a public reply” toggle with its own template (e.g. “Done! Check your DM 📩”). Off by default — when on, the reply appears publicly under the commenter's comment alongside the DM.
Can it DM everyone who comments, not just people who type a keyword?
Any-comment mode covers every eligible commenter on the posts the rule covers — except people who opted out (STOP), already received a reply inside your repeat window, or can't receive DMs. Prefer keywords? Whole-word, exact-phrase, contains and regex matching are all available, and several rules can run on the same post with different messages.
Which keywords work best?
One word your audience would genuinely type: LINK, PRICE, SIZE, PLAN. Whole-word matching keeps “LINK” from firing on “hyperlink”, so common words stay safe. Put the keyword in your caption — “Comment LINK and I'll DM it” — and the trigger doubles as an engagement engine.
Is comment auto-reply safe for my Instagram account?
AutoDM runs entirely on Instagram's official Graph API and only messages people who engaged with your content first. No password access, no scraping, no cold DMs. Opt-out detection and repeat protection run before every send, and rate-aware sending stays inside Instagram's limits. No automation is risk-free — Meta can restrict any account for policy violations — but the official API plus these guardrails is the safest way to automate. AutoDM is not affiliated with or endorsed by Meta or Instagram.
Does this work on Reels too?
Yes. Reels and feed posts both support comment triggers, on one specific post or across your whole account. Story replies are a different trigger with its own setup — see the story reply automation guide.
Is there a limit on comments or DMs?
The free tier includes unlimited automations with no credit card. Sending is rate-aware to stay inside Instagram's API limits, so during traffic spikes replies queue instead of failing — delivery follows Instagram's delivery, not an on-screen timer.
